An up-to-date literature review on outcomes for dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniations, comparing surgical management with conservative care. This session is designed to help general practitioners and emergency veterinarians guide treatment decisions and prognosis based on case presentation, owner goals, and emergency timelines, with an introduction to less invasive options such as percutaneous laser disc ablation.
By the end of this session, you'll be able to:- Understand the pathophysiology of intervertebral disc herniations (Hansen type 1) and the impact of spinal cord injury on the patient
- Understand the components of both medical management and surgical intervention for intervertebral disc herniations
- Determine the best treatment option for a range of clinical presentations, based on published literature and the ACVIM consensus statement
